Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences. In ancient days, astronomers use to carry out observation of the night sky to make predictions about the celestial objects. Astronomy is the scientific study of stars, planets, comets, and galaxies, generally known as the celestial bodies. It is also the study of all the phenomena outside earth’s atmosphere. It integrates the knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, evolution, the motion of celestial objects, and meteorology. 

Examples: Galileo Galilei, Giovanni Cassini, Christiaan Huygens,  Sir Isaac Newton, Edmond Halley and  Charles Messier and few of the most famous astronomers in the history. 

 

What are the roles and responsibilities for astronomer?

  • Observe and study the nature of matter and energy in the universe.
  • Conduct research on space, stars, moon, galaxies etc.
  • Publish their findings in journals.
  • Participate in seminars, conferences and meetings.

How to Become an astronomer in India?

There are 3 ways to become an astronomer in India

Career Path 1

Student can do 12-Science. Then complete B.Sc in Physics/Applied Physics. Further you can Proceed with M.Sc in Physics. Further you can Proceed with Ph.D.in Physics (Crack CSIR-UGC-NET examination).

Career Path 2

Student can do 12-Science. Then complete B.Tech Computer Science. Further you can Proceed with M.Tech/M.Sc in Physics/ Astrophysics.

Career Path 3

Student can do 12th Maths. Then complete B.Sc in Physics. Further you can Proceed with M.Sc Physics/Astronomy/Astrophysics. Further you can Proceed with Join Astronomy program and Ph.D..
